place for the best freelance writers
Maybe you are a student, or already in part time work and are looking to supplement your income with some freelance work. There has never been a better time to set yourself free. Working for yourself could very well turn out to be the best thing that you ever done. It can also be a little daunting, a little nerve-wracking; especially in the beginning when you are trying to find those opportunities which seem like gold dust.
There is an abundance of work out there to be had, the key is knowing where to look for it. Here are my top tips which will hopefully help you to succeed.
Next time you happen to see them ask your friends casually, if they happen to know anyone who works from home. I bet that they do! This could be a great foot in the door for you. Word of mouth recommendations are definitely the best option, at least in the beginning. If you can get some work via a trusted source it will ease any worries or concerns that you may have, particularly around payment.
The work is not going to come to you. If you are genuinely serious about getting started, then you are going to have to take proactive measures to get yourself out there and your name noticed. A positive, determined approach will get you a lot further than any qualifications that you may hold.
Turn the television off. Working from home requires more discipline than working in an office. As unlike the office, there is no-one there to actually “make” you work. You are not going to find decent quality work while watching daytime soaps are you?
If you have any special hobbies or interests. Or if there are any magazines that you particularly like reading then my suggestion would be to go ahead and contact the editor. Working from home can be incredibly dull and monotonous at times. It makes sense to try and get work that you are not just going to enjoy but is also going to fire you up. Your friends will be incredibly jealous, if you manage to pull this off.
The scattergun approach is definitely the best when first starting out. There is no point being precious about the kind of work that you will, or will not do. Be open, be flexible and you will greatly increase your chances of success.
You should be able to learn if clients have worked with freelancers in the past and what skills they look for in a good freelance writer. This will help you know how to pitch your services and develop a winning proposal.
