Vital Tips: Can You Make A Living As A Freelance Writer?

Freelance writing is an attractive alternative or addition to working a 9-5. It offers a lot of flexibility if your schedule does not lend itself to a normal eight-hour day and a lot of freedom in where and how you work. However, for some, it simply does not work out.

As flexible as freelance writing can seem, there are other, different pressures from working 9-5 in an office. Often, you will be working very closely with your client, which means that they may change their mind about certain things and expect you to react within a certain time frame. If you are not prepared for this, it can be very stressful. However, as long as you are ready to make changes, adjust deadlines etc., then you will find very quickly being a freelance writer is a much more attractive alternative to being stuck in an office for the majority of the day.

You have to be disciplined!

If, in order to make enough to survive, you need to write a certain number of articles a day, then you must make sure that you hit that target. There will be no boss breathing down your neck every day, which means that you will have the freedom to eat when you want, go shopping when you want and pick up the kids when you want. Still, it also means that you are the only one who is going to be motivating you to work! Some people find this very easy, but others do not. Just remember: if you have a minimum number, hit it, every day. If you miss one day - because we all have to take days off - make it up over the rest of the week. This is a proper job, and you have to treat it as such!

Don’t attempt to do everything!

Although it can be very tempting to apply for all the jobs you are presented with, and juggle them all at once, it is essential that you do not. It may seem as though you have enough time to tackle five different projects at once, but just one delay or hiccough in your schedule could mean the difference between getting all five done and getting only two and half done. Just take what you know for certain you can handle, given that you will need to have a life outside of your job to see family and friends, eat, drink and rest.

Pitch your services

You should be able to learn if clients have worked with freelancers in the past and what skills they look for in a good freelance writer. This will help you know how to pitch your services and develop a winning proposal.
