The Story Editing Process Looking for the Gold

"You can serve the Devil or you can serve the Lord, but in the end, you're gonna' serve somebody."    . . . . Bob Dylan

What is the story editing process?  Like the rules of screenwriting - and screenplays themselves -  story editing

              (1) varies with every individual practitioner and
              (2) contains some basic elements, including but not limited to:

1) FINDING the real gold in the story.

2) Helping the writer MINE that gold according to the WRITER'S unique vision and voice.

3) Targeting this EXECUTION OF THE VISION toward two specific audiences:
                a) the final viewing audience and
                b) the audience to whom you are marketing
the script -- whether that is one person or
                    an entire company.

4)  In other words, STORY EDITING is about creating

                  a great script  . . .

                  that is marketable.

5)  And THEN securing forward movement on the project

  • a request to receive a synopsis or read the script

  • getting a forward recommendation on the script

  • attaching an actor, director, or distributor

  • or securing an option, step-deal, or full sale.

Let's start with Point One.  Finding the gold in the story.  After I introduced Robert Jordan in the first seminar I did with him in 1994, he said, "Shirley has been adamant about insisting that I skip the basics and present you with advanced principles of screenwriting.  She says that you writers already know the basics.  And that you won't feel you're getting your money's worth if I teach you the basics.    Well, Shirley is wrong."
